Program of Gender Studies, NTHU
Since School Year 2003

I. Program Summary

This program is designed to offer systematic and interdisciplinary courses on the gender studies for graduate and PhD students and to serve as a minor degree or supplementary program to meet students' future career needs.
The study of feminism and genders has been explored and developed for the past thirty years, with its academic status now being greatly raised and fully recognized. Many of the issues concerned have indeed significantly and profoundly influenced our contemporary society and numerous theories of studies, making this indispensable and interdisciplinary field of study a trend in humanities and social science as well as in the academia as a whole. While many outstanding schools around the world have set up research centers or programs for gender (or feminism) studies as an attempt to promote and facilitate gender related education and mechanism, and as one of the major and leading academic institutes for education and research alike in Taiwan, National Tsing Hua University feels obliged to fulfill its academic duty and to propel the development of this important field.

Our country has now legislatively passed “the Domestic Violence Prevention Act,” “the Sexual Assault Prevention Act,” ”the Gender Equality in Employment Act,” and “the Gender Equality in Education Bill.” These laws and bills all require public and private sectors to establish and prepare designated personnel on gender related issues, thus creating an increasing need of talents on such knowledge in the government agencies, schools as well as industries. This Program of Gender Studies is established and designed to meet such needs, by providing with professional knowledge on gender issues and by preparing students for the relevant future career.
